My mom was painting my little brothers nursery while I was in my room by myself. I picked up a penny I found on my shelf. I wonder what this tastes like, I thought. I popped the penny into my mouth. Before I could spit it out, the penny was already in my throat.
I tried to cough it up but it wouldn’t come out. It was wedged in at the bottom of my throat. I was terrified. What if it’s stuck forever? What if it won’t come out? What if I have to go to the doctor? What will I tell my parents? I didn’t know what to do.
My family and I were eating dinner that same day. Every time I swallowed my food, I would wince. My parents looked worried so they asked me what was wrong. Those terrible questions flashed back into my mind. I was trying to just tell them but words wouldn’t come out of my mouth. “ No, don’t worry about me, I’m fine.” Was the first thing that escaped my lips.
The next few days were terrible. The penny kept causing me pain every time I swallowed something. My parents were getting more and more suspicious every day. Finally, they got the real answer out of me so they rushed me to the hospital.
I was so scared and nervous to get the penny out. Worried thoughts rushed through my head and I didn’t know how to react to that since I was so young. The doctors then asked me if I would rather get it out or have it in my throat for the rest of my life. I thought about it for a moment and decided it was better to get it over with.
While I was being wheeled into my room, I thought about all my friends and family in my neighborhood thinking that I would never see them again. The doctors gave me bubble gum flavored gas. It made me very sleepy so I closed my eyes and fell asleep.
I opened my eyes very slowly. I looked around and I was back in my room and not in the hospital. I swallowed and there was no penny in my throat anymore! . I was so excited to have that penny out of my throat. Next time, I need to think twice before I put things in my mouth.
